Community rink near Kelowna stymied because of land sale

KELOWNA–Kids in the Scotty Creek area near Kelowna won’t be playing hockey on a neighborhood ice rink this winter.

For the past few years the neighborhood has been building and maintaining a rink on an  empty lot on Saratoga Road.

Community members have raised funds every year to make improvements to the rink, and recently brought in a load of topsoil to level out the ground before flooding the ice.

This year however, Black Mountain Irrigation District, the owners of the property, aren’t allowing the rink to be built.

The lot is a well site which no longer provides water, and they’ve voted to sell it.

Before the sale goes ahead, the district is removing the topsoil brought in by the neighbourhood.  They say the topsoil significantly alters the property and was unauthorized.

In addition, they say any further alteration or use of the empty lot would result in liability issues that it’s not willing to accept.

The Black Mountain Irrigation district is now seeking fair market evaluation on the property ahead of listing the lot.
