Baseball fans woke up in shock Thursday morning to the reports of Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos leaving the ball club after rejecting a contract extension.
Citing multiple sources, Sportsnet broke the news of the GM’s departure, less than a week after the Blue Jays were eliminated from the post-season.
The 38-year-old Montreal native helped end the team’s 22-year playoff drought, by capturing the American League East Division.
The Kansas City Royals eliminated the Jays in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series.
Anthopoulos’ contract expired at the end of October. His departure comes just days before incoming president Mark Shapiro takes over from Paul Beeston.
Fans reacted with disappointment and anger.
“What a mess in Toronto letting Anthopoulos walk like that its ridiculous, that wouldn’t happen in any other city,” Michael Ceccato said on Twitter.
“So anyone else looking forward to Alex Anthopoulos’ speech after winning Exec of the year?, Mark Roe tweeted.
