WINNIPEG — Assiniboine Park Zoo is set to welcome two new polar bear cubs. Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship discovered the two 11-month old cubs were orphaned and relocated them from Churchill to the Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre at Winnipeg’s zoo.

The bears’ mother was killed when she was hit by a cracker shell. A resident was trying to scare her and her cubs away from a building. Experts say cubs at this age do not have a chance of survival if left on their own in the wild.
The two cubs have already arrived at Assiniboine Park Zoo but will be in quarantine for 30 days.
