MONTREAL – The first edition of the Grande Marche du Défi Pierre Lavoie took place in Montreal Sunday morning, under grey and dreary skies.
But the mood in the crowd was anything but dreary.
Over 6,000 participants laced up for a high-energy five-km walk through downtown Montreal.
The goal of the event, organized in collaboration with the Quebec doctor’s federation, is aimed at encouraging Quebecers to get active and make healthy lifestyle decisions.
“We believe it is so important to encourage people to eat better, move more, and stop smoking to be in better health and live longer,” said Genevieve Lebrun, communications director with the Défi Pierre Lavoie.
She went on to say that the event was ultimately about improving quality of life.
Families with strollers in tow, older couples, some furry friends and even Habs mascot Youppi, who had a very busy night at the Bell Centre on Saturday, took part in the fun.
And that’s something Lebrun wants to emphasize.
“We are doing prevention, it’s just positive, we are organizing a party, it’s just fun,” she enthused.
The event was about participating and not about your time at the finish line.
Organizers hope to build on this year’s success and make the Grande Marche an annual event.
