Controversial documentary ‘Bully’ set to open in Calgary

A powerful film, intended to explore the often horrible results of bullying, makes its Canadian debut on Friday.

However, Calgarians can see an advance screening of the movie Bully, Monday night.

The American documentary is getting a lot of attention.

It follows the heart-wrenching stories of five people impacted by bullying.

Anti-bullying advocates in Calgary are going to fill the movie theatre with principals, schools trustees, teachers, parents and their children for Monday’s preview.

It’s hoped the film can generate a revolution of change.

“I hope it speaks to those out there who don’t think it’s an issue, or because it hasn’t directly impacted them, they don’t see how pervasive it is,” says Dare to Care’s Lisa Dixon-Wells. “Silence is no longer an option.”

The film is not without controversy, because of some profanity the movie was originally rated R in the United States.

However, after petitions and celebrity endorsements, the movie is now ‘unrated’ in the U.S., leaving it up to the discretion of individual theatre chains.

Here in Canada, Bully has a PG rating.
