Video calling is a relationship-saver for many long distance couples and no one knows that better than Sija and Babyface – two seals who, with the help of their human handlers, have been using the technology to keep their love alive.
Sija and Babyface were a couple when they lived together at the UK’s Cornish Seal Sanctuary, but after Sija conceived two seal pups – despite being on birth control – the sanctuary was forced to separate the couple, as mating is frowned upon.
Sija was moved to Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park to live in an all-female enclosure; and although her handlers said she adapted well, they thought it would be nice to reconnect her with her partner.
“This is the first time we’ve ever done anything like this – a seal FaceTime,” said a Weymouth SEA LIFE Adventure Park handler in a YouTube video.
“Initially the seals were a little bit cautious of the screen, but got more and more curious and started nosing at the screen which was lovely to see.”
The handlers have appropriately nick named the seal’s online dates “Seal-Time.”
