Mosaic is laying off staff at its Colonsay, Sask. potash mine. The company announced 46 employees at the mine east of Saskatoon have received layoff notices.

The layoffs take effect Dec. 14.

According to the company, the layoffs are permanent that affect hourly, unionized workers.

Mosaic said it was a difficult decision but it is in response to the current market conditions and will allow the mine to remain competitive.

In September, Mosaic said it was cutting production at the mine by extending maintenance work.

The decision was primarily due to delayed fertilizer purchases in Brazil and North America.
