A Clarksville, Tenn. man has been charged after an affidavit showed the man helped plan the killing of his stepson after taking out a life insurance on the child.
The incident took place on Oct. 4 when two-year-old Joseph Bankston was at his grandmother’s house with his mother’s new boyfriend, Brandon Jimenez.
According to WSMV News, a gunman entered the home and shot several times, injuring Jimenez and killing Bankston.
The gunman was later found out to be Facebook friends with the toddler’s stepfather and estranged husband to the mother.
David Wi, 23, is charged with criminal conspiracy to commit homicide and Zackery Alexander, the gunman, is charged with criminal homicide.
Both the two-year-old’s mother and grandmother were at the home during the event.
A next-door neighbour said she received a call from the grandmother immediately after the shooting.
“She was yelling, telling me to call 911,” told Candace Johnson to WSMV of the phone call she received. “[The grandmother] told me Joseph’s been shot.”
Before the arrest of Wi and Alexander, Wi had mourned the death of his stepson on his Facebook and even linked a GoFundMe page to his account in hopes of helping to pay for the child’s funeral.
But a sketch of Alexander from the description Jimenez provided quickly linked police to the suspect and Wi.
The arrest affidavit also showed Wi had taken out life insurance on Bankston, Wi’s wife and a child the two of them recently had.
Wi and Alexander are each being held on a $5-million bond.
