Conservatives hold on to North Okanagan-Shuswap

The riding of North Okanagan-Shuswap has a new Conservative MP.

Mel Arnold, who took the helm as Conservative candidate when MP Colin Mayes retired from politics, won the riding.

His closest contender was Liberal Cindy Derkaz, followed by Jacqui Gingras and Green Party candidate Chris George.

In the 2011 federal election, Colin Mayes defeated NDP candidate Nikki Inouye by 29.1 per cent, winning a third term in parliament.

Since creation prior to 1979, the riding surrounding Vernon has elected right-wing candidates in all but one federal election.

The riding of North Okanagan-Sushwap is the largest riding in B.C.

Arnold lives in Salmon Arm and former head of the B.C. Wildlife Federation.
