WINNIPEG — A Toronto woman is speaking out after Elections Canada said she will not be able to vote in Winnipeg on election day.

Pamela Bielak flew in for a sudden funeral Monday morning after finding out her great uncle passed away.

“I didn’t plan on having to fly in for a funeral, no one plans on a death in the family but you do plan on voting,” Bielak said. “I make it a mission in my life for every vote… I’ve always voted.”

“When I called, they said I can’t because you didn’t do advanced voting,” Bielak said. “They said it doesn’t matter, you can’t vote, you don’t live anywhere in Manitoba.”

Marie-France Kenny from Elections Canada said there is nothing more Bielak can do if she did not vote by special ballot or advanced voting which already took place.

“Her only option is to vote in her own riding,” Kenny said.

Bielak said she wants to see a voting option for Canadians like her in similar situations.

“I’m proud to be a Canadian but today I feel like Canada let me down,” Bielak said.
