NDP candidate Fin Donnelly has been elected in the riding of Port Moody-Coquitlam.
Donnelly took 35.8 per cent of the vote, beating out Liberal Jessie Adcock, who finished with 30.7 per cent.
Tim Laidler of the Conservatives finished third with 29.9 per cent.
The boundaries for this riding have drastically changed, so Donnelly, who has represented New Westminster-Coquitlam since 2009, was seeking re-election here with a significantly different group of voters.
This district is an amalgam of the former ridings of New Westminster-Coquitlam (which Donnelly won by 4.5 per cent in 2011) and Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam (which elected Conservative MP James Moore by 26 per cent in 2011).
Had this riding existed in the last election, the Conservatives would have taken it by six per cent more votes than the NDP (based on polling results).
With the exception of 1993-2006 under Paul Forseth, Coquitlam has typically elected NDP MPs. Provincially, Coquitlam has tended to be an NDP stronghold, while Port Moody and the other municipalities to the north have tended to support right-wing parties.
