Halifax Regional School Board votes to shut 3 schools, 2 others spared

HALIFAX – Two small schools in Halifax were saved from the chopping block Wednesday.

Halifax regional school board voted to keep South Woodside Elementary in Dartmouth and Central Spryfield Elementary in Halifax open.

The board also voted to close Prince Arthur Junior High after a new primary to Grade 9 facility is built in Dartmouth.

Board members decided to delay plans to shut down Sackville Centennial Elementary and Gertrude Parker Elementary in Lower Sackville until June 2014.

Halifax regional school board has had to cut $10 million from its budget.

Board chairman Irvine Carvery says the board had found $7 million in savings but still needs to reduce spending by another $3 mil­lion.
