Le Fridge offers food to all Montreal families in need

MONTREAL – Families in Montreal may have a new solution to ease some of their financial struggles.

Inspired by the European food sharing movement, Le Fridge has opened up in the Centre-Sud.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, families can now head out to the Centre Communautaire de Loisirs Sainte-Catherine d’Alexandrie on 1700 Amherst and help themselves to groceries.

One of the volunteers will unlock the fridge and clients can take whatever they need.

Financial news and insights delivered to your email every Saturday.

Items include fresh food, non-perishables and simple dishes.

All families need to do is bring their own bag.

Whereas some food banks require proof of income before distributing groceries, the community fridge is open to all.

Le Fridge founder Catherine Adam explained to Global News that the project is not a food bank or a grocery store.

Its mission is to combat malnourishment and reduce waste in the city.

Bonnie Soutar, Director of Development at the NDG Food Depot thinks that the idea is an interesting one.

She expects that the fridge will need to be well-staffed to ensure that it is properly maintained and kept in sanitary conditions.

The fridge is stocked thanks to donations. It is also maintained by volunteers.

For anyone who would like to donate or participate, contact the centre.
