Calling all gardeners: City of Montreal giving away free compost

MONTREAL – Attention all gardeners, the city of Montreal is giving out free high-grade compost this weekend at the St-Michel Environmental Complex between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Every year, the city reserves over 1500 tons of compost produced from fallen leaves collected the previous year to hand-out to Montreal residents.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The compost, which is rich in nutrients, is ideal for reinvigorating lawns, enriching the soil’s physical structure as well as replenishing nutrients, and protecting against perennial weeds.

The city says that composting green waste and dead leaves is an excellent way to reduce waste going into landfills and is therefore a simple way to contribute environmental preservation.

Although the compost is free for the taking, residents have to be willing to get their hands dirty and do all the grunt work. Anyone interested must bring their own shovel and containers to fill, as well as a proof of residency.
