World boxing champion and now, a Canadian citizen

MONTREAL – Boxing champion Lucian Bute has become a Canadian citizen.

The 32-year-old Romania native was sworn in along with 30 other new Canadians before a citizenship judge in a ceremony in an elementary school gym in Montreal.

Bute moved to Canada in 2003 to begin his professional career. The slick southpaw has won all 30 of his pro fights.

He won the International Boxing Federation super-middleweight title in 2007.

He will defend the champion’s belt for the 10th time in England against Carl Froch in May.
