The R-word is over: Yellowcard Day aims to rid conversation of cruel word

EDMONTON — Yellowcard Day relies on the power of social media to coax people to rid their conversation of the R-word: retard.

The hashtag #nogoodway spread quickly Thursday, as a way for people to show support for the initiative.

This year, Edmonton police joined the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Special Olympics Canada and Motionball in the campaign.

According to the Canadian Association for Community Living, 899,000 Canadians have an intellectual disability, which is about 2.5 per cent of the population.
