CALGARY – Police have unveiled a new tool aimed at helping the city’s most vulnerable stay safe.
The Vulnerable Person Self-Registry allows those with physical, mental or medical conditions to give first responders access to vital information which may be used to assist them in an emergency.
The registry will be accessible through the city’s 911 call centre and will only be used by first responders when a vulnerable person is in danger or distress.

In addition, the Calgary Police Service says the information stored in the database will not be used as part of criminal investigations.
The registry was spearheaded by the Diversity Resource Team in an effort to better-serve Calgary’s persons with disabilities.
The organization said it consulted with several community organizations and the Calgary Police Service to develop the program.
How to sign up
In order to be included in the registry, vulnerable Calgarians or their caretakers need to provide the person’s name, date of birth, physical description, contact information, methods of approach and communication, a photo of person’s face and a description of any life-threatening medical conditions.
The information then has to be updated at least once each year or it will be removed from the database.
