TORONTO – After four rounds of voting, Thomas Mulcair has been elected the new leader of the federal NDP.
Mulcair took the final round of NDP leadership voting with 57 per cent support. Brian Topp, the only other candidate left in the field, garnered just 42 per cent of the vote.
Nathan Cullen was knocked off the ballot in the third round after receiving the fewest votes — 15,426 votes, or 24.6 per cent.
On the third round of voting Saturday, 62,736 of the eligible 131,000 New Democrats voted. That number is up slightly from 62,494 who voted in the second round, but still down from the 65,108 who voted in the first ballot.
