Mapping the Keystone XL Pipeline

The controversial Keystone Pipeline expansion fast-tracked by President Obama Thursday is only one part of the massive line used to pump bitumen from Alberta to refineries on the Gulf Coast.

The current pipeline runs from Hardisty, Alberta through Saskatchewan and Manitoba and then south through the Dakotas to Steele City Nebraska. From there it splits and heads to Illinois and Cushing, Oklahoma.

A backlog at the Cushing site prompted Obama to fast track the expansion of the pipeline to ship the oil from Cushing to the Texas Gulf Coast.

The expansion that was put on the backburner last year was a second pipeline that would go from Hardisty to Steele City.

A map of the entire pipeline can be seen below. The area in orange is the current pipeline. The dotted yellow lines are the planned expansion. The southern section highlighted on the map is the Cushing to Gulf Coast expansion fast tracked Thursday.
