HAMMONDS PLAINS, NS – Residents of Grandeur Estates, an assisted living facility in Hammonds Plains, can rest peacefully for another night.
It was confirmed on Wednesday that the residents won’t be removed from the home on Thursday, as family members were previously told. The assisted living facility violates a city bylaw and zoning regulations.
Grandeur Estates is zoned as R1, which isn’t suitable for a long-term care facility. The building also has no sprinkler system.
Global News reported Tuesday that some of the residents were being given a deadline of Thursday to find other arrangements, and after that they would each be moved by ambulance from their home.
“We had confirmation last December that seniors could live in a home like this, in R1 zoning, at least 4 or 5 people,” John Havill, who owns the building and property Grandeur Estates is located on, said Tuesday.
The operator of Grandeur Estates would not do an interview and would not confirm how many seniors currently live at the facility. Family members said they didn’t know about the zoning issue when they moved loved ones in.
Family members of the residents were sent this invitation Wednesday, inviting them to meet with Mayor Mike Savage and the province to hopefully come up with a solution.
