School board votes to save Marlborough Park school

CALGARY – A rare victory for parents who fought to save a northeast school slated for closure.

On tuesday night, the Calgary Public School Board voted against shutting down Roland Michener Elementary School in Marlborough Park.

The school had been expected to close its doors, as part of a plan to cut down the number of schools in the area and turn one into a junior high and middle school for grades 4 to 9.

Many parents were upset about the closure, because they wanted special needs programs to remain and didn’t want younger kids to be mixed in with older students.

Yesterday, school trustees voted 5 to 2 in favour of Roland Michener remaining open.

 Parents we talked to welcome the change, but admit they are surprised.
