Tips for keeping dry, safe and flood free for this week’s big rainfall

HALIFAX – Heavy rain is on the way, and there might not be a need for water wings, there are some things you should keep in mind to make sure you don’t end up with any flooding or water damage at the end of the day.

Global weather specialist Alex Haider is saying we could see more than 100 millimeters of rain could fall in some parts of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on Wednesday evening and Thursday.

“We are looking at heavy rainfall amounts, definitely flash flooding, flooding and hydroplaning is a big concern,” Alex said.

All of that rain has the Emergency Management Office reminding people of some tips to stay safe.

First of all, keep a close eye on weather and road conditions. With heavy rain comes an increased chance of hydroplaning, and losing control of your vehicle, especially at high speeds.

Heavy rain can cause localized flooding, so to prevent that, take a bit of time to clean any debris from drains and eaves so water can flow away from your home, instead of toward it.

Be extra cautious when getting around in the rainy weather, whether you’re walking, cycling or driving.

As for Alex’s advice, she says to make sure you “get the rain gear out, you’re going to need it.”
