Changes to 3 downtown Calgary intersections that drivers and pedestrians will notice

CALGARY – Motorists and pedestrians are advised to pay extra attention to three downtown intersections.

Starting on Monday, traffic signals on 9 Street S.W. will operate in a pre-empted manner to coordinate with CTrain activity in the intersections of 4 Avenue, 5 Avenue and 6 Avenue S.W.

The City of Calgary will be monitoring traffic flow, and may adjust signal timings if necessary.

Motorists may notice

  • some impact to traffic flow
  • unpredictable signal / traffic flow patterns
  • shortened green light when a train is approaching or lengthened after a train leaves
  • a permanent left-turn lane at 5 Avenue and 9 Street S.W.

Pedestrians may notice

  • unpredictable crosswalk timing and patterns
  • shortened walk times when a train is approaching
  • a reduced “flashing don’t walk” time at 9 Street and 5 Avenue S.W.
