Saskatchewan to ban tanning bed use for people under 18

REGINA – If you are under the age of 18 you will soon be prohibited from using tanning in beds in Saskatchewan.

On November 1st regulations to prohibit the use of indoor tanning beds for youth under the age of 18 will go into effect.

The regulations will apply to tanning facilities and businesses that offer indoor tanning such as gyms and spas.

“This step will help to protect youth from the health risks associated with indoor tanning,” Health Minister Dustin Duncan said. “The regulations represent a workable, practical approach to this issue.”

The province announced the changes earlier in the year and the new regulations were developed after consultations with stakeholders and businesses.

“This is a positive step forward in cancer prevention,” Saskatchewan Cancer Agency President and CEO Scott Livingstone said.

“Skin cancer is a deadly disease and it is important that young people are aware of the risks associated with tanning and tanning beds.”

Alberta and Manitoba both already have similar tanning bans in place.
