Cunningham, Goss each win openers at Canadian senior curling championship

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – Newfoundland and Labrador, Alberta and Ontario all surged to early leads in women’s competition at the Canadian senior curling championship with a pair of wins each on Saturday.

Newfoundland’s Cathy Cunningham followed up a 15-0 win over the Northwest Territories with a 12-5 rout of Saskatchewan in Saturday’s late draw. Cunningham’s rink scored five in the eighth end to clinch the game.

Alberta’s Cathy King improved to 2-0 with a 9-7 win over the Northwest Territories’ Ann McKellar-Gillis. King cruised by P.E.I. 9-3 in Saturday’s earlier draw.

Ontario joined the leaders, scoring two in the 10th end in a 7-5 win over Northern Ontario.

In other Draw 3 action, Nova Scotia beat British Columbia 10-6 and Quebec doubled P.E.I. 10-5.

On the men’s side, Newfoundland’s Geoff Cunningham had four points in the eighth end to win 9-4 against Quebec’s Pierre Charette.

Alberta, Manitoba, Northern Ontario, B.C., and Saskatchewan joined Goss at 1-0 in men’s play.

Alberta opened the tournament with a 10-4 win over P.E.I., Northern Ontario edged Nova Scotia 7-6, B.C. beat Yukon 8-2, Manitoba defeated Ontario 8-5 and Saskatchewan rolled over New Brunswick 10-3.
