CALGARY – One of three people on trial for brutally beating a Calgary man to death in 2012 took the stand in his own defence Monday.
Garrett Smith testified in front of a jury of 11 people, and denied participating in the beating of 49-year-old John Herrera Garcia.
Garcia was the victim of a random attack on May 23, 2012, as he walked home from the grocery store.
Smith claimed co-accused Jarod Henry and Chantelle Campbell were to blame in the incident, and said he tried to tell them to stop.
“I was telling them to stop. I wanted to stop the whole situation,” Smith told court Monday.
