Airdrie RCMP investigating damaged election signs

File: RCMP. Global News

Airdrie RCMP are warning people that anyone caught damaging official election signs will be charged with a criminal offence.

RCMP, along with municipal enforcement officers, are looking into complaints about damaged signs.

They say the issue is particularly prevalent along Main Street.

Signs have either been moved or damaged, and in some cases replaced by homemade signs.

RCMP say homemade signs can only be posted on private property; any signs placed on public property will be removed.

Under the Canada Elections Act it is an offence to touch or move another party’s sign in any way.

It is also an offence to post signs that do not meet the regulations for election signs, and are not approved by a registered party for a registered federal election candidate.
