Huskies honouring Canadian Forces with ‘Support our Troops’ night

SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies will be honouring the Canadian Forces when they take on the Regina Rams Friday night at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon. The sixth annual “Support Our Troops” night will pay tribute to the men and women serving in the Forces.

“The game has become a tradition and we are honoured to have them here as our guests and I think it’s a great way to recognize their efforts and the sacrifices that they make for our country and our province,” said Huskies head coach Brian Towriss.

“It’s always a special night for our players and for our fans.”

Members will be honoured prior to the game, which includes a military colour guard, a moment of silence and a fly-over by Canadian air force jets.

The Huskies will take to the field in custom-designed camouflage uniforms. This year, the uniforms will feature Arctic camouflage combined with Huskie green. The helmets will feature army, navy and air force insignias.

The helmets will also feature the crests of the HMCS Saskatoon, that was recently on patrol in the Arctic, and the HMCS Unicorn.

David Dubé, a former Huskie and longtime supporter of the program, said it is another way to recognize and honour the troops.

“It’s great to take a day other than Remembrance Day to remember those who came before them and to thank those who are currently serving in our community and around the world,” said Dubé, who along with his wife, Heather Ryan, provided the uniforms.

Dubé and Ryan will also be topping up contributions made to the Soldier On fund, a charity that provides financial aid to injured and ill members of the Canadian Forces.

The pre-game ceremony gets underway at 7 p.m. CT. Prior to that, fans will be able to meet members of the military during the tailgate barbecue that starts at 5 p.m. CT.
