Installation of new bike racks starts in Saskatoon

Conversion of 250 old parking meters into bicycle racks starts in Saskatoon. Neil Fisher / Global News

SASKATOON – With the installation of the new flexpay parking stations in Saskatoon, the old parking meters have become useless. That changed on Wednesday.

The city is starting to refurbish some of them, converting 15 into bicycle parking stations where cyclists can secure their bikes – and also have a seat and a place to perch items on a small table top.

The idea was criticized when first proposed to city council but a decision was made to proceed anyways.

The retrofit is expected to cost $23,000.

Aside from these stations, 235 old meters will be converted to a basic bike rack throughout the downtown core, Broadway and Riversdale.

That will involve adding triangular steel frames to the meter post for securing bikes.
