LAVAL -An 82-year-old woman is dead after a fire ripped through her house on Friday evening.
Laval police responded to a 911 call at 6:30 p.m. at a house located at 498 Zephyr St. in Sainte-Dorothée.
Firefighters and Urgences-Santé paramedics were quickly called to the scene after flames and very thick black smoke was spotted spewing from the house.
Franco Di Genova with Laval police told Global News that the neighbours were heroic.
“We want to thank them big time,” he said.

According to Di Genova, when they first saw the smoke they went and knocked on the door of the house to see if everything was okay. The elderly woman answered the door and apparently told her neighbours that everything was under control and she went back in the house. As the smoke grew thicker, neighbours once again knocked at the door to help the 82 year-old woman and her 83-year old husband out of the house.
The woman had second and third degree burns over 75 per cent of her body. She was transported to hospital in critical condition and passed away at 3:00 a.m.
The 83-year-old man was transported to hospital and is being treated for smoke inhalation and shock.
It is believed the fire started in the kitchen.
Laval police officers, specializing in criminal fire investigations, were on the scene alongside the coroner to determine the circumstances that led to the devastating blaze.
According to Di Genova, the house will probably be torn down.
“Everything is covered in soot, I don’t see how they will be able to recuperate anything,” he said.
