Paris formally submits 2024 Olympic bid to IOC, joining crowded race

Paris has formally submitted its bid for the 2024 Olympics in a letter to the International Olympic Committee, hoping to bring the games back to the French capital for the first time in 100 years.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo and French Olympic Committee president Denis Masseglia signed the letter that promises to “build a project which is unforgettable, innovative, responsible and sustainable.”

Hamburg, Germany, and Rome filed their applications earlier this week, while Los Angeles, and Budapest, Hungary, are other declared bidders.

While there has been much speculation, there is no firm answer yet on whether Toronto plans to submit a bid for the games.

Paris hosted the Olympics in 1900 and 1924 and bid unsuccessfully for the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Games.

The IOC deadline for formal submission of bid entries is Tuesday. The host city will be selected in 2017.
