Judge reserves decision in bail hearing for man accused of murdering Jessica Newman

CALGARY – The man accused of killing young Calgary mother Jessica Newman will stay in remand for at least another weekend, after a Queen’s Bench Justice reserved his decision on bail application by Kevin Rubletz Friday.

Rubletz, 30, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend, 24-year-old Jessica Rae Newman.

Newman, the mother of Rubletz’s two-year-old son, disappeared in March. Eight weeks later, her body was found in a ditch north of Calgary.

Evidence presented during the bail hearing is under a publication ban.

Many of Newman’s family and friends were in court for the hearing, as well as family members and friends of the accused.

Because Rubletz is accused of second-degree murder, the onus is on the defence to prove to court he should be granted bail.

The judge is set to announce his decision Monday.
