Elon Musk suggests nuking Mars on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’

Should Earthlings blast Mars with nukes to make it inhabitable? The answer is yes, according to Elon Musk.

“It’s very inhospitable, that’s true,” the Tesla and SpaceX CEO told Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night. “It is a fixer-upper of a planet.”

Leave it to the billionaire entrepreneur and inventor to look beyond a few hiccups in plans to colonize the Red Planet, where temperatures can dip down to around -125 C.

“Eventually you could transform Mars into an earth-like planet,” said Musk. “You’d warm it up.”

“With a blanket?” said Colbert, who is in his first week at the helm of The Late Show.

“There’s the fast way and the slow way,” said Musk. “The fast way is to drop the nuclear weapons over the poles.”

“You’re a supervillain!” Colbert said accusingly, comparing him to Superman’s archenemy Lex Luthor.

Musk goes on to say that the slow way to warm up the planet would be to release greenhouse gasses “like we’re doing on Earth” until Mars’ atmosphere warmed up.

Musk isn’t the only one thinking about life on the Red Planet: NASA plans to begin cultivating plants on Mars, with the goal of creating sustainable life.
