SaskPower partners with world potash giant

REGINA – SaskPower is partnering with mining giant, BHP Billiton to develop and promote a made-in-Saskatchewan emissions reduction technology.

“This partnership with BHP Billiton is the next step to making carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology globally accessible,” said economy minister Bill Boyd.

The announcement was made in front of dozens of delegates from over 100 countries attending the SaskPower symposium.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between BHP and SaskPower that will see creation of a global knowledge centre in Regina.

The goal will be to research and reduce the cost and risk associated with CCS projects.

“The Boundary Dam project is an exciting project and is the very first to commercialize to the extent it has, to integrate fully. And it is just a one-of-a-kind one-off and we just want make sure that this information can get out to the rest of the world,” said Dean Dalla Valle, BHP Billiton’s Chief Commercial Officer.

While no dollar figures have been announced for the project, Dalla Valle said this will be a multi-million dollar commitment over a number of years.
