5 things to do in Toronto this weekend (Sept. 11-13)

With so many events in and around Toronto, it’s hard to keep track of what’s happening and what’s worth venturing out for. Here are five things we recommend doing in the city this weekend.

Spot some celebrities

The 2015 Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing this weekend and that means lots of celebrities will be hanging around town, eagerly awaiting someone to stop them on the street for a photo or autograph (well, not really, but you can still try as long as you use the proper TIFF etiquette).

While the fest moved south to its permanent home in the King and John St. area a couple of years ago, stars still enjoy the bars and restaurants up in Yorkville and you can usually catch a few coming and going at the Hazelton Hotel. The InterContinental Hotel on Front St. is another popular space for celebs to linger, as is the Fairmont Royal York down the road. Of course your best bet is at the screenings themselves, where the stars are much more open to posing for photos and giving autographs as they walk the red carpet. Sit outside of Roy Thomson Hall, the TIFF Bell Lightbox, the Scotiabank Theatre or the Elgin/Winter Garden Theatres long enough and you’ll eventually bump into someone famous.

See a wild live show

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

On a stage only three metres in diameter setup inside a special tent on Queens Quay West, Spiegelworld’s Empire is a wild show that’s part circus act and part burlesque performance. There’s foot jugglers, a contortionist, daredevil roller skaters, the acrobatic act Gorilla Girls and much more. Tickets to the show, which runs until Oct. 18, range between $45 – $129. Be warned, this is not a family-friendly show and is a 16+ event. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit spiegelworld.ca.

Do a 5K obstacle course

Based on the hit television show, the Wipeout Run at Woodbine Racetrack is a 5K obstacle course that promises to deliver a lot of fun with a bit of pain. Featuring giant wrecking balls, a bubble bash swing and a giant “foam of fury” slide, the run is open to anyone over the age of 18 of any athletic ability. The run is on Sat. Sept. 12 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $75 if purchased before Saturday or $85 at the event. For more information and to register, visit wipeoutrun.com.

Take your dog for ‘high tea’

Woofstock’s 12th annual dog fest doesn’t run until the weekend of Sept. 26 and 27, but the organizers are hosting a “Movie Star Doggy High Tea” at the Fairmont Royal York this Sunday at 2 p.m. to promote the fest. Your doggy will get the Hollywood treatment at the event with a selection of gourmet dog cookies and treats to try, along with the chance to get dressed up as an A-list celebrity (there’s even “puparazzi” to snap photos of your pooch). Tickets are $40, with a portion going to the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). For more information, visit woofstock.ca.
