Edmonton Food Bank warns of phone scam asking for money

EDMONTON — A new scam is making the rounds in Edmonton, and this time it’s hurting the reputation of an important community organization.

The Edmonton Food Bank says someone has been calling around the city, claiming that they are with the food bank and asking for monetary donations over the phone. The organization says that is not how it operates.

“Just a reminder we never ask for money on the phone or at the door,” said Marjorie Bencz, executive director of the food bank.

“Monetary donations can be made by contacting us directly, by sending us a cheque in the mail, or securely online through our website on our CanadaHelps link.”

The food bank said a concerned donor brought the phone scam to its attention. Anyone with questions about its fundraising activities can call the food bank at 780-425-2133.
