A Grayson County, Texas woman was hit and killed by a drunk driver on Sunday while trying to move a turtle she saw in the middle of the road.
Lizette Lopez, 20, was on her way home with her family after a shift at Nick’s Restaurant when she noticed a turtle in the road and decided to move the reptile to safety. That’s when Clyde Stanbery, 32, hit the young woman and continued to drive away from the scene.
Stanbery crashed into a ditch and tried to steal another vehicle after ruining his own. Police said he was also armed with a machete.
“She saw a turtle on the side of the road, and of course she has a big heart, so they pulled over, she got out of the car, and then she tried to move it and that’s when she got hit,” Lopez’s cousin said to KTEN News.
Stanbery is charged with numerous charges, including intoxicated manslaughter, kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon.
