Investigators believe the fire originated in a basement apartment. The residents who normally occupy the unit, a mother and her child, weren’t there at the time.

Residents living on the main floor of the home were able to get out safely.

Firefighters attending the blaze pulled a litter of seven kittens from the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
