Streets blocked in downtown Winnipeg after reports of suspicious package

WINNIPEG — Emergency crews rushed to a downtown hotel after a security guard noticed a suspicious package at the entrance and called the police.

Hargrave and Carlton Street between York and St. Mary Avenue were closed just before 5 p.m. after the suspicious package was reported at the Delta Hotel.

St. Mary Avenue was also closed.

The Winnipeg police bomb disposal robot was be deployed at the hotel to manage the suspicious package according to a tweet sent out at 7:15 p.m.

Winnipeg police sent out a tweet saying they were dealing with an “incident” at the hotel at 350 St. Mary Avenue. Everyone in the Delta Hotel was evacuated to the Convention Centre.

Around 8:50 p.m. Winnipeg Police tweeted out the bomb unit “utilized measures to disrupt the suspicious item.”

Streets in the area were reopened around 9:30 p.m. when police determined the area was safe.

Earlier in the evening officers also had to block Princess Street at William Avenue over concerns of a suspicious envelope delivered to an apartment.

Police said a lawyer called police to investigate and around an hour and a half later the item was deemed safe.
