Hollywood’s hand-wringing over Lucy may backfire

So let's get this key point out of the way: the Valley Zoo
has not been an ideal home for Lucy the Asian elephant. Her
enclosure is too small. So is her outdoor paddock. She's a member of
a social species, and yet she has no other elephants to be with, and
hasn't since Samantha, the zoo's African elephant, was sent to join
a breeding program in North Carolina two years ago.
