Low turnout at parking consultation meeting

Monday night, Winnipeggers had the chance to voice their opinions on a parking plan for high-demand areas in the city’s core.

But there were a lot of empty seats at the public consultation meeting.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority is coming up with a high-demand parking strategy after experiencing a more than 100 per cent increase in downtown street parking from 2009-2010.

The parking authority says that instead of short-term street parking, it found parkers continually plugging meters parking on the street for more than the allotted two hours.

Its hoping starting the meters at 8:00 a.m. and extending evening hours plus increasing the dollar an hour parking fee to $2 in areas like the new SHED districts around MTS Centre and the Exchange District will encourage more turnover, creating more open spots.

The city is also proposing turning some loading zones into parking spaces after business hours, something it’s done in the Exchange.
