RIM rolls over Apple: PlayBooks outsell iPads in Canada last week

TORONTO – Many tablet-users expressed disbelief as news that more of RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBooks than Apple’s iPads were sold in Canada’s top retailers last week.

Research in Motion (RIM) announced on Twitter that both Future Shop and Best Buy reported their PlayBook was the best-selling tablet in the first week of March.

Popular media site, Techvibes, reports that “aggressive discounts” and a “revamped operating system” increased the PlayBook’s popularity.

International online technology publication, The Register, emphasizes the PlayBook’s Canadian ownership.

“[RIM] has a presence in the country that engenders some nationalistic appeal, so Canadian sales shouldn’t be taken too seriously,” writes The Register’s Bill Ray.

Despite the encouraging news, RIM has a long way to go to catch up with Apple. During the most recent quarter, RIM sold 150,000 BlackBerry PlayBooks compared to over 15 million iPads sold by Apple.
