UPDATE: Kelowna firefighters are asking the boaters to stay a safe distance away from the water bombers so crews can safely fill their tanks at Okanagan Lake.

KELOWNA — Several new wildfires are burning in the Central Okanagan and the B.C. Wildfire Service says humans are likely responsible for sparking two of them.

A fast-moving, aggressive wildfire is burning on Little White Mountain and within a couple of hours, has scorched 60 hectares.

Melissa Klassen, a fire information officer, says the wildfire is currently Rank 4, and may potentially move up to Rank 5, which means it is difficult to control. B.C. Wildfire Service is sending two initial attack crews. Rank 6 is the most intense fire behaviour.

Firefighters are also fighting a blaze sparked at Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park. It is estimated at five hectares and is Rank 3, potentially Rank 4.

Klassen says air tankers are controlling the blaze and it looks to be successful. She says the cause is unknown and remains under investigation.

Another fire fire that broke out is about five kilometres off of Gillard Forest Service Road.

Klassen says an initial attack crew responded early this morning. The spot fire is estimated at less than a hectare.

She says this fire is believed to be human caused.

All three fires are in remote locations and not threatening any lives or properties.

In total, crews in the Central Okanagan Regional District are fighting seven wildfires:

  • Beaver Lake area K40719 (west of Lake Country): 1 hectare
