Former MRU student president charged with bank robbery has lengthy criminal history

CALGARY – Students and staff at Mount Royal University still can’t believe a former president of their student association has been charged after a bank robbery.

Police took Meghan Melnyk into custody following the robbery of a southeast Servus Credit Union this past Wednesday.

She made her first court appearance via closed circuit television Friday morning.

Melnyk is accused of approaching a female teller, indicating that she had a weapon and demanding cash.

Court documents show a butterfly knife may have been used in the incident.

It’s not the first time Melnyk has had troubles with the law.

In January 2008, she was convicted of possession of a stolen vehicle in Whitecourt and ordered to complete 150 hours of community service.

A warrant was later issued for Melnyk after she failed to complete her community service.

Melnyk was also found guilty of falsely applying for a Social Insurance Number in 2010, and fined $400.

Then in February 2011, Melnyk was charged with property fraud under $5,000.

Melnyk resigned as president of the Student’s Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU) earlier this year following accusations of questionable conduct.

She is set to appear in court again Wednesday.
