Dashboard camera footage out of Park City, Kansas shows the unbelievable moment a man police believe was intoxicated tried to assault a Park City police officer: by swinging his dog, whom he was walking on a leash, at the officer as a weapon.
“I’ve seen people try to use a dog and sick it on someone as a weapon, but I’ve never seen someone pick up a dog and swing it through the air to use it as a weapon before, that’s a first,” Chief Phil Bostain of the Park City Police Department told KSN News in Kansas.
Police first received a series of number of 911 calls Sunday night saying a suspicious man had been seen in the area, walking through people’s backyards.
When the unidentified police officer arrived, he said he found 26-year-old Michael Rush walking across private property and kicking fences. The officer said he believed Rush was inebriated, either by alcohol or some other substance.
Dashboard camera from the officer’s cruiser shows the man lunge at the officer, who responds by using pepper spray and deploying his Taser. The man then attacks the officer with a weapon of his own: his little dog, whom he had been walking, swinging him by his leash like some sort of small, furry nunchucks.
“Everyone sees this little dog that’s defenseless. This dog’s not here by its own choice, and it’s used as a weapon. It’s disturbing,” said Bostain.
When backup arrived, officers were able to subdue the man. He currently faces a charge of animal cruelty.
As for the dog, he was not seriously hurt by his involuntary assault, and has been taken to the local animal shelter for observation.
