Virginia frat suspended for sexually suggestive ‘freshman daughter drop off’ signs

WATCH ABOVE: Old Dominion University has come under a lot of heat following signs hanging from a residence near the campus. Joe Fisher reports.

A chapter of a fraternity at Old Dominion University has been suspended after sexually suggestive banners targeting female freshmen were displayed at an off-campus house.

White signs hanging from the balconies at the house near the college in Norfolk, Virginia read: “Rowdy and fun, hope your baby girl is ready for a good time,” “Freshman Daughter Drop Off” and “Go ahead and Drop Off Mom Too.”

Images posted to social media showed the banners displayed outside the residence.

The signs have since been removed but the outrage over the sexually suggestive messages has led to the suspension of the Eta Chi Chapter of the Sigma Nu Fraternity.

“Sigma Nu Fraternity has suspended the activities of the Eta Chi Chapter at Old Dominion University pending completion of an investigation into offensive banners displayed from an off-campus, privately-owned property near the ODU campus last week,” Brad Beacham, the executive director of Sigma Nu’s national headquarters said in a statement Monday.

“The Fraternity condemns the derogatory and demeaning language used on the banners. Such language has no place in our Fraternity or within any caring community, such as that of ODU.”

Administrators at the Old Dominion condemned the message contained in the banners aimed at incoming freshmen students.

“Messages like the ones displayed yesterday by a few students on the balcony of their private residence are not and will not be tolerated,” said ODU’s vice president of student engagement and enrollment Ellen Neufeldt in a statement on Aug. 22. “The moment University staff became aware of these banners, they worked to have them removed.”

Old Dominion’s Student Government Association also issued their own statement condemning the incident and filmed a video addressing the banners.

“An incident occurred this weekend that does not reflect the University’s commitment to the prevention of Sexual Assault and Dating Violence. Not only do these actions taken by a few individuals undermine the countless efforts at Old Dominion University to prevent sexual assault, they are also unwelcoming, offensive, and unacceptable,” said the student association in a written statement.
