CALGARY – It was a sleepless night for fire fighters, after reports of an explosion and massive house fire on an acreage west of Calgary Friday starting around 7 p.m.
It broke out in a home on Highway 1A, halfway between Calgary and Cochrane.
People who called 911 reported an explosion, and within minutes it was up in flames.
When crews arrived, the roof had been blown right off and debris was scattered everywhere.
Debris spread up to 100 feet away from the building itself.
No one was home at the time of the fire.
When crews started dousing the garage, the roof collapsed with one vehicle inside and part of the house later collapsed in on itself as well.
Rockyview County stepped in bringing a lot of water trucks to scene.
“This is a total loss, we’ve got it collapsed now on three sides of the building and the fourth wall is damaged beyond repair,” said Rockeyview Fire Chief Dax Huba.
The acreage is west on Township Road 262, west of Glendale Road.
It’s a horse ranch but no animals were injured by the fire.
