SAINT JOHN, N.B. – A fire department official says two men who got into trouble on a cliff Wednesday evening in New Brunswick are safe.

Platoon chief Brian Wilson of the Saint John Fire Department says there were no injuries but the men were taken to hospital Thursday morning.

Joint Task Force Atlantic says in a tweet that it sent a Cormorant helicopter to the cliff along the Fundy Footpath, roughly 80 kilometres northeast of Saint John.

Wilson says the fire department received a call at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night and they sent a six-person, high-angle rescue team to the cliff.

“It’s known as Martin Head,” he said. “It’s a rugged piece of coastline that attracts a lot of tourists and kayakers and climbers.”

He said one of the men had climbed to the top to get help and the other man was rescued and taken to the beach below.

The RCMP say both men are in their 20s and although their location was known, fog and the terrain prevented search and rescue for reaching them until daylight.

The Fundy Footpath is a 40-kilometre trail that runs from Fundy National Park to Big Salmon River, N.B.
