WATCH: Thieves target volunteers with Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue as they respond to a rescue. Jennifer Palma has details.
A member of the Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue has been targeted by thieves after responding to a boat rescue. Around 10:30 p.m. last night, Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue were called to retrieve six people stranded on a boat with motor problems on Pitt Lake. Six members and two boats responded to the call.
Tired crews were putting away gear after they returned to the base at 2:30 a.m., when someone stole a purse containing credit cards, cash, cell phone and a small camera from a member’s unlocked vehicle.
Barbara Laing says she left her purse on the floor of her car, moved a boat and truck, and returned minutes later to find the interior light on and her belongings missing.
“We just finished up packing up our stuff, and I noticed right away it wasn’t there,” said Laing.
The theft comes just a month after members of the Mission volunteer fire department were robbed while on an emergency call. The thief managed to get away with the firefighters’ wallets and personal items.
