TORONTO – After the NHL trade-deadline had come and gone at on Monday, Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke held a press conference, during which he discussed how difficult it can be for a hockey player to play in Toronto.
Burke suggested, though media coverage of hockey in Toronto can sometimes be an asset to the team, it can also be a “millstone.” Burke suggested that it takes a special type of player to live up to their potential while being surrounded by Toronto’s barrage of media coverage. “You know when we go to get a player, we don’t talk about whether he’s an NHL player, we talk about whether he can play in Toronto. It is different here, I’m not blaming the media or being critical. It’s our life,” Burke said.

Though Burke did clarify that he wasn’t complaining, some fans took to Twitter to express their discontent with what – they felt – was criticism of the Leafs fan base.
